Neighboring South Kingstown, this outdoorsy town is known for its parks, trails, ponds and beaches!  Step into nature as you enter Charlestown, this is the place for you if you’re looking to have serenity, privacy and your choice of outdoor activities steps away from your door.  Being just outside of South Kingstown gives you the ability to be a 10 minute drive into town for any and all amenities and shops you need while being just far enough outside of town to enjoy the peace and quiet of nature.

Nature’s Calling

Imagine walking the trails of Burlingame State Park with your pup in the morning, heading down to East Beach, the Breachway or Blue Shutters to soak up some mid-day sun, then dropping your kayak or paddle board in at Ninigret Pond for an evening paddle through the pond.  Sounds like a heavenly day to me!  There are plenty of outdoor activities for you here in Charlestown!  Having the convenience of ponds, trails and the beach is something that cannot be found in every town, and it all being so close together makes this town that much more unique!  If this sounds like the lifestyle you have, or envision for yourself and family, this may be a place to check out!

Restaurants and Shops

While there isn’t a ton of local eateries and shopping to be done in Charlestown, what they have is second-to-none!  The Rathskellar is my favorite joint because there is something for everyone here!  In the summertime, enjoy patio games and live music while surrounded by fire pits! In the winter, you can choose to watch the game in the bar area, or head into the dining room for a more relaxed, intimate feel.  The Nordic is another great spot that is family-run (we love our local businesses) lakeside all-you-can-eat seafood buffet. Definitely worth the taste!

As for shopping, most of that will be done in neighboring towns like Westerly and South Kingstown, but as for a unique must-see, the Fantastic Umbrella Factory is just that.  One of my favorite places to go to walk the grounds, feed the llamas, explore the bamboo forest and support local artisans and farmers!  Open year-round, this funky spot encompasses several little shops, a cafe, many gardens, free-roaming farm animals and a nursery, so there truly is something to see around every corner!

Burlingame and Beaches

This RI state park is located in Charlestown and spans more than 3100 acres.  It is primarily a campground with over 700 campsites and 20 cabins (  You can also fish, swim, hike, and canoe in Watchaug Pond.

More interested camping by the beach? Charlestown Breachway can accommodate campers/ RVs that are self-contained.  Imagine waking up, walking out your door and seeing a panoramic view of Block Island – so dreamy!

East Beach is another beach in Charlestown that allows self-contained, 4-wheel drive camping units as long as a Barrier Beach Pass is purchased (see for more info on that). I am not a self-contained camper, so I am not as privy to this information, but I do know that in the spring, summer, and fall months, these areas are very popular for folks looking for a beach vacation without the price tag!
