Great Housewarming Gifts

Posted by Emma Parker on December 1, 2021

Sure, everyone loves a good bottle of wine, loaf of bread or a candle when they buy a home. I love to celebrate my client’s closings with a sweet goodie basket. Selfishly, I get tired of buying the same gifts over and over. While it’s a safe bet to get a nice bottle of something & a gift card to a home decor store, I like the challenge. The challenge to really personalize what I give to my clients. That’s why I’ve come up with this gift guide of great housewarming gifts for new homeowners!

For the Aspiring Cook

Know someone living on their own for the first time & not the most savvy cook? Get them a cooking class for two! There are plenty of local cooking classes that you can choose from or give a gift card to the school. While giving something that’s not physical isn’t all that exciting, it can be really beneficial! You can attend with them, or give them their choice in guest, to give them a fun night out. After all, who doesn’t love a new recipe to put in their cap?

For the Messy Roommate

Giving the gift of a cleaning service may be just what your new homeowner needs! You may want to pay for a one-time deep clean before they move in or pay for a cleaning service for the first year of their homeownership. I mean, who doesn’t love a clean house?! Prices can vary, but is always a very well received gift!

A starter cleaning basket is always a good idea too! I’ll include Mrs. Meyers cleaning spray & toilet cleaner, Mr. Clean Magic Eraser, Goo Gone, bleach, sponges, rubber gloves, empty spray bottle & Thieves household cleaner. This kit pretty much covers all your major messes & will last them for several months. Either of these are great housewarming gifts for your not so clean homeowner!

For the DIYer

For the DIYer, gift cards to local hardware stores is always a good gift. If you’re close with the new homeowner, try finding out what they are planning on tackling first! Is there a tool that they’ll need or supplies that you can gather for them? What about a portable speaker for while they’re working on their projects? What about a workbench for their tools?

If they are planning on doing a lot of painting, a painter’s kit is always a warmly-welcomed gift. Throw together paint trays, stirrers, paint brushes, corner brushes, drop cloths, & a paint can opener! This is a relatively inexpensive gift that saves a tedious errand for the new homeowner!

For the Decorator

While it’s always hard to guess someone’s style, there are a few great housewarming gifts that are always wins! First off, plants are usually a safe bet. If they’re plant savvy, get a few plants to warm up their living spaces! Herbs are also a great, functional gift. If they have a black thumb, try giving an air plant or succulent! Snake plants are also relatively hard to kill and are a bit more of a ‘statement’ plant.

Blank picture frames & pillow inserts are also safe bets because it leaves the personalizing up to the homeowner! They can fill the frames with art, pictures or quotes, and find pillow covers that fit their style. Better yet, pair these with a gift card to a printing service or a local decor shop!

For the Green Thumb

For the garden gurus, if they have a yard or outdoor space, give a gardening basket! Fill with garden shears, pruners, plant food, hand trowel, gardening gloves, & hand rake from a local farm or gardening shop. Flower boxes are a nice gift and can spend an afternoon installing these with your loved one.

You can also gift them with some seeds or seedlings to plant in their food garden, depending on the time of year. Garlic is a great fall gift to plant, herbs can grow inside year round, and most fruits & veggies are spring/ early summer plants.

Make it Special

Whether this is a gift for a first-time home owner, or not, give them something unique. Sure it’s easy to grab a bottle of wine or a gift card, take the time to think about them & what they can use in their new home. Great housewarming gifts are always special, but these unexpected personalized gifts are so thoughtful & will be remembered. Try to shop local, support small & customize to the best of your ability! Think about what would be special to you when buying a new home & use that as your starting point.

My South County holiday gift guide will be posted next week with my favorite places to shop local & what my favorites are – so stay tuned for additional gift ideas!
