WELCOME TO SOUTH KINGSTOWN
This lively and vibrant small town has a character and charm unique to itself! South Kingstown, or South County as we locals call it, is actually made up of several villages; Wakefield, Peace Dale, Kingston, Matunuck, and West Kingston. Kingston and West Kingston envelope the University of Rhode Island, while Wakefield and Peace Dale are closer into the main part of town. Matunuck is a small town by the water, south of Narragansett. All of the villages have their own charm and local spots and events that you can participate in year round! Below are some of the highlights, from a local’s eyes, that emphasize the community feel here!
Hopping on the bike path, taking a walk or drive down Main Street to enjoy Brickley’s ice cream, enjoying a cocktail or delicious pub food at Mews or Ocean Mist, and heading down to the beach for a walk, boat, surf down in Matunuck are just some of the activities the locals enjoy here. Looking to enjoy live music? Ocean Mist offers both free and scheduled, ticketed concerts throughout the summer and in the off-season as well. Downtown Wakefield and the Guild put on live shows in the summertime as well, so don’t forget your blanket and picnic dinner! In the fall, you can participate in the Beer&Gear Road Race or Mist-to-Mews ocean kayak/paddle! You can be sure you will never find yourself short of activities to be a part of here!
Restaurants & Local Breweries and Distilleries
The diversity of restaurants and food in South County is something that we pride ourselves in. Seafood, Mexican, Thai, Asian, American, and Italian are just some of the many types of local restaurants here. And you can never go wrong with any of the breakfast spots, just sayin’.
Whalers Brewing was started in South County and continues to be a huge contributor of the local culture and is located in the old mill building. Stop into the brewery for a pint, 6-pack or howler of your favorite on-tap beer while playing giant Jenga, pool, or corn hole! Sons of Liberty is the local distillery here in the old textile mill. Here you can try one of their signature craft cocktails, beers, or for those who are a bit more hardy – try a pour of any of their whiskeys or bourbons neat or on the rocks while listening to live music and munching on some food truck food.
You can’t go wrong here, so try a little of everything and you’ll never run out of options!
For me, South Kingstown has always been a one-stop-shop. I find that if I am looking for a specific product, there is a good chance that I can find it somewhere south of the tower. There are plenty of grocery stores, liquor stores, local farms, and coffee shops for anything from groceries, to plants, and cakes and pastries. Recently, Salk’s Ace Hardware has moved in and made a big splash. The employees are super helpful if you’re looking for anything from contractor needs to home improvement tools and products. Having trouble with your car? There are plenty of wonderful local mechanics to help you with anything from a broken AC unit to your transmission is about to drop out of your vehicle. Missing Benny’s? Job Lot has been a wonderful addition to anything and everything you could be in the market for! I find that no matter what I’m looking for, I can always rely on a local business to help me find it!
